To further strengthen the development of the college’s student affairs team and enhance counselors’ professional competence and digital work capacity, Hainan International Institute delivered a special training session entitled “Empowering Counselors’ Student Work with AI in the New Era” on 28 October.Following the first Student Affairs Roundtable, which featured thematic sharing on students’ mental health education, this training focused on improving counselors’ digital competency and introduced approaches to applying AI tools in routine student affairs.Luo Wei, Deputy Secretary of the Directly Affiliated Party Branch and Vice Dean of the Institute, served as the speaker. All student affairs staff of the Institute attended the training.

At the outset of the training, Luo Wei opened with the question “Where does counselors’ time go?” to prompt counselors to reflect on time allocation and efficiency improvement in their daily work. Covering the nine core work scenarios for counselors including ideological and political education, one-on-one counseling and class management, he presented ideas and methods for leveraging AI tools to support student affairs.

He then focused on tools such as Doubao and WorkBuddy, explaining prompt writing, Skill application and intelligent data analysis. He illustrated how to boost task efficiency by refining prompts and utilizing relevant skills, offering practical insights for counselors to streamline workflows and improve the quality and effectiveness of their work.

During the Q&A session, counselors shared their hands-on experience and exchanged views on the operation of AI tools, prompt refinement and application in real work scenarios. Luo Wei responded to each question raised, proposing tailored ideas and solutions aligned with practical work requirements. This helped counselors better address difficulties in tool operation and deepen their understanding of AI-assisted student affairs.

Luo Wei emphasized that artificial intelligence offers new approaches and perspectives for student affairs, yet the ultimate goal of technological application remains student education. Proper use of AI tools can help counselors reduce the burden of repetitive administrative work, freeing up more time and energy for the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education, with focused efforts on ideological guidance, growth support and caring student development. Meanwhile, counselors must strengthen awareness of data security when using AI tools, ensure standardized, safe and appropriate application, and fully unlock the positive impact of AI-enabled student affairs.

Roundtable discussions fuel progress through empowerment. While artificial intelligence boosts efficiency and brings methodological innovation to student work, it also sets new requirements for counselors in terms of digital literacy, professional judgment and sense of responsibility. Hainan International Institute will continue to follow emerging changes and demands of student affairs amid digital transformation, guide counselors to enhance technical competency and deepen educational reflection through practice, so that intelligent tools can better serve students’ growth and success.    (Text by Gao Hui)
