To fully implement the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education, further strengthen the development of the college’s student affairs team, and continuously improve counselors’ professional competence and the effectiveness of collaborative education, the first “Student Affairs Roundtable” Sharing Session of Hainan International Institute was successfully held on October 21. Centered on the theme Closed-Loop Management of Psychological Screening, this session closely aligned with frontline counselors’ daily work scenarios and focused on discussions of key and challenging issues in student mental health services. Ma Zixuan, a university psychological counselor, was invited as the keynote speaker. Luo Wei, Deputy Secretary of the College’s Directly Affiliated Party Branch and Vice Dean, together with all student affairs staff of the college, attended the session.

At the opening of the event, Luo Wei briefly elaborated on the original intention and positioning of the “Student Affairs Roundtable”. The initiative aims to build consensus and jointly tackle challenges through in-depth dialogues and invigorate the student affairs team. He emphasized that the “Student Affairs Roundtable” follows a complete closed loop of practice review – capacity empowerment – cognitive refinement, guiding student affairs work to shift from routine task execution to value-based education. The session is structured around four pillars: one case, one skill, one question and one reflection. Typical cases of student administration and ideological-political education are reviewed to examine handling processes, lessons and experience; practical capabilities including one-on-one counseling, crisis intervention and home-school communication are delivered to frontline practitioners; genuine dilemmas, pain points and common challenges are raised for collective brainstorming; professional insights, educational reflections, work summaries and personal growth reflections are shared to foster mutual resonance and empowerment.
During the presentation session, Ma Zixuan, university psychological counselor, delivered a thematic sharing entitled Closed-Loop Management of Psychological Screening. She first illustrated the fundamental role of counselors in student mental health education and clarified the core objectives and practical value of psychological screening. She pointed out that psychological screening is more than mere data collection. It serves as a vital mechanism for early identification of potential mental health risks among students and the development of an on-campus mental safety network. It enables early detection, early attention and early intervention, transforming mental health work from responsive handling to proactive prevention. Drawing on real work scenarios, Ms. Ma broke down the full workflow of one-on-one counseling step by step, covering positive attention to build rapport, active listening to interpret students’ emotions, evidence-based questioning strategies, comprehensive information collection and identification of critical risk signals. She also focused on operational guidelines for preliminary psychological intervention, risk recognition and timely referral, as well as the multi-party coordination mechanism linking schools, families and communities, helping counselors grasp appropriate communication boundaries and standardize response procedures.
In the discussion segment, counselors shared recent practices, reflections and challenges in light of their respective job responsibilities, covering one-on-one communication, risk identification and home-school liaison. Consensus was forged and priorities were clarified through experience exchange and intellectual deliberation.
This inaugural roundtable has concluded, while the journey of nurturing students continues. The College will leverage the “Student Affairs Roundtable” as an ongoing platform, cater to the development needs of the student affairs team, deepen exchanges and carry out regular professional training for counselors. These efforts support the development of a high-caliber, specialized cohort of student affairs backbone staff and steadily elevate the standard of student work across the College.(Text:Ma Zixuan)
